The University of Witten/Herdecke (UW/H) is the first German university under private sponsorship. It was founded in 1982 and has since established itself as an important educational institution in Germany. Currently, it employs more than 800 staff members and has a total of 3,000 students enrolled in the faculties of Health and Economics & Society in Witten.

We are currently seeking a Ph.D. student for our team at the Chair of Virology and Microbiology, starting at the earliest opportunity. The chair conducts research in the fields of Molecular Medicine and Virology.

The position is available on a part-time basis (20 hours per week). Initially, the appointment is for a period of 1.5 years, which can be prolonged to fulfil the PhD training. 

Your tasks

  • Study the biology of adenoviruses and using this information to develop novel viral vectors for therapeutic approaches
  • Develop novel adenoviral vectors using most advanced molecular engineering technologies base on alternative adenovirus types
  • Evaluate the novel viral vectors for gene therapeutic applications to treat cancer and/or genetic diseases

Your profile

  • The successful applicant should hold a master/diploma degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Medicine or related subjects 
  • Is highly motivated and is interested in virology, and the novel concept and technology development for gene therapeutic approaches
  • The ideal candidate should have solid theoretical knowledge and practical experiences in molecular biology and cell culture
  • Be able to work in a team-oriented manner and have good communication skills
  • Is proficient in both written and spoken English
